Founder's Guide
How to Start a Microschool in Alabama
Microschools — small, intentional schools of roughly 5 to 50 students — are the fastest-growing movement in education. Parents want them, churches are opening them, and Alabama's homeschool-friendly laws make it one of the easiest states to start one. Here's the honest, step-by-step path.
Decide what kind of microschool you’re running
Most Alabama microschools operate as church schools or under a church school ministry (the same legal framework cover schools use). Others run as learning pods where each family maintains its own homeschool enrollment. Both paths avoid the heavy regulation of starting a private school.
Handle the legal coverage
In Alabama, students must be enrolled in a church school (or have a certified tutor) to satisfy compulsory attendance. The simplest route: have each of your families enroll with a cover school — enrollment handles the state paperwork, and your microschool provides the day-to-day learning.
Pick your curriculum (the make-or-break step)
This is where most founders stall — writing curriculum takes years. Licensing one takes a day. A complete K-12 catalog with lessons, videos, quizzes, auto-grading, placement tests and AI tutoring means you open your doors with everything ready.
Set up your learning space
A church classroom, a dining room, a rented storefront — microschools run anywhere. Keep your student-to-guide ratio small (that’s the whole point) and make sure every student has a device for online lessons.
Set your tuition and enroll families
Most microschools charge $300–$800/month per student. With curriculum, grading and records automated, one guide can comfortably support a roomful of learners — the math works even at small sizes.
Open your doors
Students take placement tests, land in the right grade level, and start learning. Auto-graded coursework fills the gradebook while you focus on what actually matters: the kids.
